As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, McMaster University reminds students to celebrate responsibly and respect the surrounding community.
“While St. Patrick’s Day hasn’t traditionally been a time for large gatherings at McMaster, it’s still important to remind our students to celebrate responsibly and consider the safety and well-being of themselves and the community,” says Sean Van Koughnett, Associate Vice-President, Students.
“Wherever our students choose to celebrate, whether that’s in Hamilton or elsewhere, it’s important to make smart choices, look out for one another and respect communities, so we can ensure a positive experience for everyone.”
The City of Hamilton’s Nuisance Party Bylaw is in place year-round to ensure public safety. Attending disruptive gatherings at any time of the year can result in significant fines, enforced by the City of Hamilton and Hamilton Police Service.
“We are reminding all residents in the City of Hamilton to stay safe this St. Patrick’s Day weekend,” Robin Abbott, Superintendent, Division 1, Hamilton Police Services. “We encourage anyone who is celebrating to do so responsibly and to respect laws and bylaws.”
A zero-tolerance zone, known as the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI), will also be in effect from Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 11:59pm to Monday, March 17, 2025 at 11:59pm to help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Additionally, McMaster is funding increased Hamilton Police patrols around campus on St. Patrick’s Day to support a safe environment for all.
