Susan Tighe, provost and vice-president (Academic), will deliver the 2023 State of the Academy address on Wednesday, March 1st.

Susan Tighe, provost and vice-president (Academic) invites McMaster faculty, students and staff to the 2023 State of the Academy address.

The in-person event is set for Wednesday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. at L.R. Wilson Hall. Please register online to reserve your spot. All are welcome to attend.

The address will also be live streamed on McMaster’s YouTube channel. Registration is not required to watch online.

“The State of the Academy is an opportunity for our university community to come together to celebrate our successes and to look ahead to the work yet to come,” says Tighe.

“Supporting students is at the centre of what we do and this year’s address will show that our faculty and staff have truly honoured that commitment despite the challenges of the past year.”

During the address, Tighe will provide updates on the efforts being made campus-wide to support innovation, share statistics on enrolment and on research funding, and highlight academic achievements. She will also speak to the many initiatives in support of McMaster’s strategic plan. They include:

  • The graduate funding working group
  • The Strategic Alignment Funds and the Strategic Excellence and Equity in Recruitment and Retention (STEER/R) program
  • Mental health supports and resources
  • Black cohort hiring
  • Strategic Alignment Funds initiatives
  • Indigenous Studies Department
  • Partnered in Teaching and Learning: McMaster’s Teaching and Learning Strategy
  • MacPherson Institute progress review

“I hope that hearing stories from our six Faculties and from around our campus will inspire us all to continue supporting and encouraging the excellence in teaching, research and service that McMaster is known for,” Tighe says. “I also want to hear from our community members.”

Following the address, students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to ask questions from the floor or online during a 15-minute Q&A with Tighe.

Although the provost will not be able to answer all online questions one-by-one, they will help to guide the development of the presentation and some will be answered during the Q&A.

Questions may be submitted directly here on Slido.
