Deyontae (Dj) Patterson moves easily between labs and concert stages, campus life and community service.
 
The fourth-year computer engineering student says his technical coursework and creative pursuits feed into each other: He’s worked as an Electrical Engineering teaching assistant at McMaster, a course instructor for Black Boys Code, and is currently on a co-op placement as a software engineer at Korotu Technology.
 
On the artistic side, he writes music and plays regular gigs around Hamilton.
 
Last fall, he organized a benefit concert to raise money for hurricane relief in Jamaica — an experience that showcased what students can do when they come together.

How do you know when moving across the world is the right choice?  
 
For Mohanad Ismail, it meant knowing he’d have a community of support after making the move from Egypt to study at McMaster.
 
That support started before he even landed in Canada, when he connected with Ryan Ahmed.
 
McMaster would “unlock a world of possibilities,” the @mech.mcmaster assistant professor told him.
 
Ahmed spoke from experience. He had also moved from Egypt to study at McMaster.
 
Ismail’s big move paid off. His time at McMaster led to hands-on research, publications, industry experience and lasting connections with his lab colleagues.
