Hugs, tears and laughter made this year’s Indigenous Graduate Celebration feel like a warm family gathering

The annual event celebrates Indigenous graduating students from all disciplines, as well as students graduating from Indigenous Studies

There was plenty to celebrate — the accomplishments of the students, the loved ones supporting them and the impact these graduates will have on their communities in the next chapter of their lives

The celebration was organized by Indigenous Student Services, with the support of the Indigenous Health Learning Lodge, the McMaster Institute for Indigenous Research and the Indigenous Education Council

Celebration, community and culture were on display this week at the 5th Annual Black Excellence Graduate Celebration
 
To the sound of joyful cheers from family and loved ones, the perseverance and journeys of the McMaster graduands were celebrated and awarded.
 
The theme of this year’s celebration was “Aya — Rooted in Community, Rising in Excellence.”
 
In Adinkra tradition, Aya is the fern — a symbol of endurance, resourcefulness and independence. At this year’s celebration, it spoke to the @macbssc as both home and roots, and the graduates as the ones rising, surrounded by a village of support.
