Congratulations to the remarkable women honoured at last night’s @ywcahamilton Women of Distinction celebration, including members of our McMaster community who took home awards👏

We are pleased to share Chancellor Emeritus Santee Smith; faculty members Karen Hill, Sheryl Green and Katherine Gardhouse; and graduates Sarah Kalmanovitch, Kim Ritchie and Marisa Mariella were among last night’s award winners.

Each of these women was honoured for their dedication, passion and ongoing efforts to create meaningful change in our communities.

Meet Thomas Kanitz Rasmussen, a fourth-year Integrated Science (iSci) student at McMaster.
 
Through the School of Earth, Environment & Society’s (@mcmastersees) NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award, Thomas spent last summer in Professor Narro Pérez’s Glacial Sedimentology Lab, and then traveled to southern Peru for fieldwork studying the Qori Kalis Glacier.
 
In the Fall, Thomas presented his research at an international conference in Cusco, Peru. Attendees were surprised to learn he was an undergraduate student and that he delivered his presentation in Spanish — despite not being fluent in the language.
 
His experience in Peru, however, was not his only defining moment as an undergraduate.
 
Along the way, Thomas has had many memorable experiences, including leading the men’s rugby team (@mcmasterrugby), getting involved with the Latin American Network at McMaster (@lanmumcmaster), and building strong community connections.

This week, community members joined Chancellor Nicholas Brathwaite and legendary advocate Jean Augustine at a moving event to close out Black History Month at McMaster. It was an evening of art, poetry and music, a chance to reconnect with old friends, and to participate in a celebration of a shared history of struggles and triumphs.

Mollie Eriksson is a PhD student studying youth mental health. She`s also a professional goalkeeper with the Ottawa Rapids ( @ottrapidfc).

It’s certainly busy, but Eriksson has balanced sport and school her whole life.

Working on her dissertation while playing pro soccer isn’t all that different, she says. “Just the stakes are a little higher.”

“When you have a passion for what you’re doing, anything is achievable.”
