Chancellor Emeritus L.R. “Red” Wilson, a dedicated champion of our students, a visionary leader and beloved member of our community has died at the age of 85.

Wilson was a game-changing presence on our campus for more than four decades — as an undergraduate student, a member of the Board of Governors, a two-term Chancellor and as one of the university’s most generous donors.

“We have lost a McMaster icon, an exceptional Canadian and just a magnificent person,” said McMaster President and Vice-Chancellor Susan Tighe.  

Wilson will be remembered for his deep commitment to our students, and his transformative vision of inspiring a new generation of leaders.

When Olympian and McMaster student @maddieschizas reached out for an extension on an assignment (competing for @teamcanada as an excuse), the sociology professor was quick to respond.

Little did he or Schizas know that their email exchange would be read by millions around the world.
