Meet Arianna Santos: an undergrad doing first-of-a-kind nuclear research in Canada.  
 
The fourth-year materials engineering and society student, who is doing an interdisciplinary minor in nuclear, studied surrogate TRISO particles this summer, a type of fuel used in some Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
 
The fuel technology that Santos is looking at is intended to be used in advanced nuclear reactors, particularly in remote northern communities in Canada, and it has the potential to change energy use in Canada someday.

Jessica Lo and Clayton Vrenjak’s research in reactor fuel imaging is helping make nuclear energy safer and more efficient.

Lo says she wants people to understand the power of nuclear energy compared to solar and wind energy. “I want to be able to create those conversations about why it’s so safe and reliable.”

The Ph.D. nuclear engineering students represent the next generation of nuclear experts in a field where demand in the coming decades is expected to skyrocket.

They are also part of a wide group of researchers and experts advancing nuclear science at McMaster’s suite of world-class facilities.

Kendal Garlow knows that locally grown food can, and does, change lives.  
 
As she wraps up her Master of Indigenous Studies at McMaster (@macindigenous_studies), Garlow is launching a self-watering greenhouse business to support Indigenous communities.
 
The researcher shares how her entrepreneurial endeavours are rooted in her research on Haudenosaunee food and identity.
 
She also shares the powerful connections food offers us, and how it has shaped her life, research and hopes for the future.
