McMaster has been situated in the heart of west Hamilton for more than 90 years, and students have always had an important role to play in making this neighbourhood a great place to live.

That’s why McMaster is launching a campaign to welcome students to the surrounding community and encourage positive neighbourly interactions.

Students moving to the Westdale and Ainslie Wood neighbourhoods this fall have the chance to get to know the families, businesses and other students nearby. The Good Neighbour campaign encourages students to introduce themselves to their neighbours and take actions that will positively contribute to the neighbourhood – like learning how to properly compost and recycle, taking responsibility for keeping sidewalks accessible, being conscientious and respectful by keeping noise low, and keeping property in good condition.

“The McMaster community is lucky to be surrounded by a beautiful neighbourhood filled with friendly people, local shops, and nature trails. Students play a role in making the neighbourhood a great place to live for everyone,” says Sean Van Koughnett, associate vice-president, students and learning, and dean of students.

“Taking the initiative to say hello to those who live next-door, caring for one another, and being kind are all ways that McMaster students can be good neighbours.”

As part of the Good Neighbour campaign, the university is sharing messages with students both directly and through various digital, print and social media.
