In photos: The staff and faculty ice cream social 

More than a thousand McMaster staff and faculty — and quite a few happy passersby — got together to enjoy a cool treat and a break in the heat this week.

The annual Ice Cream Social, hosted by McMaster’s president and vice-presidents, gives senior leaders at the university an opportunity to celebrate the turn of the academic year and thank faculty and staff for their dedication and hard work.

Just as importantly, it’s a chance for McMaster community members to catch up with colleagues, meet new people and enjoy a moment of fun, said President Susan Tighe.

“All around me I’m seeing people who are so excited to greet co-workers they haven’t seen in a while, or maybe someone who works in a different part of campus,” Tighe said.

“There’s just something wonderful about taking a moment to enjoy the people who make your workplace feel like a community. And ice cream obviously makes everything even better.”

For Maureen MacDonald, provost and vice-president (Academic), the social is a simple way to recognize the people who make McMaster what it is.

“It’s a privilege to work alongside such talented and committed people,” said MacDonald. “This is a simple way for us to say thank you, while also taking a moment to celebrate the community we’re building together.”

That spirit of connection was evident throughout the afternoon, as colleagues from across campus gathered together, including people who might not otherwise cross paths in their day-to-day work.

“Our university is at its best when people have opportunities to connect, share a laugh and get to know one another beyond their day-to-day roles,” said Saher Fazilat, vice-president, Operations and Finance.

“Our community is made up of people who care about one another and about our university and it is important for them to know their efforts are appreciated.”

Besides a range of frozen treats, there were also games, activities and a raffle.
