Day of Giving events series shines a light on the importance of inclusive excellence

To help mark the Day of Giving, the McMaster community is invited to join in a series of free virtual events aimed at highlighting a range of topics, perspectives and experiences that speak to the meaning and importance of inclusive excellence.

On May 11, McMaster celebrates the Day of Giving, an ambitious university-wide fundraising campaign focused on supporting Black student excellence, Indigenous priorities and equity-deserving students at McMaster.

To help mark the Day of Giving, faculty, staff, students, alumni and the broader McMaster community are invited to join in a series of free virtual events aimed at shining a light on a range of topics, perspectives and experiences that speak to the meaning and critical importance of inclusive excellence.

EVENTS INCLUDE:

Building Inclusive Communities through Allyship – May 4 @12pm

What does it mean to be an ally, and how can your allyship empower your friends, family, and colleagues to thrive? Join Anne-Marie Pham for an interactive session that will ground participants in a conversation around allyship and help deepen your understanding, reflect on your style(s) and identify concrete steps you can take to support equitable, diverse and inclusive communities.

Black & Boldly Belonging: Daring to Trust Your Compass with Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa – May 9 @ 7pm

One of Time magazine’s “2021 Next Generational Leaders,” Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa is dedicated to the mentorship of racialized youth and the advancement of the Black community and beyond. Through her work, she speaks to addressing inequities and advancing efforts in wellness and mental health, diversity and inclusion, and women empowerment. Join Dr. Chika as she shares her story, and a spoken word performance.

The Power of Inclusive Excellence – May 11 @12pm

Join McMaster students and staff, past and present, as they share their personal experiences & unique perspectives, both on the strides made toward inclusive excellence and the distances yet to be covered.

Joining the conversation is Mariette Sutherland ’90, the first student president of the First Nations Student Association, Sage Hartmann ’22, president of the Cooperative of Indigenous Students Studies & Alumni, Ashleigh Montague ’15, former McMaster African Student Association member and Anuoluwa Popoola ’23, vice-president, Black Aspiring Physicians at McMaster.
