McMaster’s Provost has been honoured by the Hamilton/Halton branch of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers as the organization’s Engineer of the Year.

David Wilkinson and his outstanding work was recognized at an Oct. 23 Engineering Week luncheon.

Wilkinson’s research focuses on the ductile fracture of metals and alloys, as well as lightweight materials for fuel efficient cars and advanced high strength steels.

His academic career has been recognized through a number of prestigious awards. He was awarded the title of Distinguished University Professor at McMaster University in 2008, a title that was then available to only 8 active faculty members at a time. In 2009 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and in 2010 as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Wilkinson served as Dean of McMaster’s Faculty of Engineering from 2008 to 2012.

McMaster and Hakai Institute awarded $2.3 million to lead ancient DNA study on climate change

Led by genetic anthropologist Hendrik Poinar and his colleagues in B.C., the project will use ancient DNA to understand how landscapes recovered from climactic shifts, and predict how current ecosystems will respond to a changing climate.
